About My Teaching Print

My private teaching studio is open to new students of all ages and is based primarily in the northwest area of Tucson (Oro Valley, Marana, and Catalina).  However, I also teach in central Tucson at the Tucson Symphony Center (2175 N. 6th Ave).

My objectives as an artist teacher of oboe are to:

  • Impart the technical skills necessary for the enjoyment of playing the oboe.
  • Prepare oboe students to function effectively in a variety of musical environments (i.e. chamber music, auditions, large ensembles, solo recitals).
  • Convey a broad scope of musical knowledge that will enhance and develop the student’s ability to interpret and perform a wide variety of repertoire.
  • Foster and cultivate a high level of responsibility and personal accountability.
  • Teach students to constructively evaluate their own performances.
  • Teach all of my students to be self-sufficient reed makers by the end of high school.
  • Encourage and develop a life-long appreciation for classical music.
  • Inspire students through live performances that regularly demonstrate my commitment to high quality music making.

In order to help my students achieve these objectives, I feel strongly that:

  • Patience and creativity are paramount to a successful relationship between teacher and student.
  • Participation in a variety of musical activities offers students the opportunity to develop their independence as a musician, explore new repertoire, and build organizational/time management skills.
  • Reed making gives the student a level of connection to their playing that further underscores their commitment to playing the oboe.
  • Students must not take themselves too seriously, nor judge themselves too harshly.
  • Students must be encouraged to regularly listen to classical music and attend live performances whenever possible.
  • A teacher leads by example.

Students will experience the following as a member of my private studio:

  • Structured lessons with clearly defined assignments and expectations.
  • Encouragement to participate in various music programs beyond their weekly lesson.  Assistance with repertoire from these programs when necessary.
  • Participation in studio recitals (presented annually).
  • The opportunity to participate in reed making workshops and oboe performance classes.
  • A great deal of fun and lots of laughter as we work together to improve oboe skills.
